How to get there

Theatre at Waitakere are on the ground floor behind Piha Ward.

Preparing to attend

Look up Medirota to see who the Registrar (or Consultant) is on that list. Message them to ask is it okay for you to join them and where you should meet them.

Look up the patients using clinical portal. Write down Age, Operation and Indication (reason for the operation).

Make sure you arrive on time and in scrubs with a hat with your name written on it. 7:30am for morning list. 12:30 for afternoon list.

Watch ‘How to do a Pelvic Examination’ as theatre is a good place to perform these. Bring your consent stickers.

When you arrive

Introduce yourself to the pre-op staff, say who’s list you are on.

When the doctor arrives, introduce yourself. Tell them you have looked up the cases.

Ask if there were anyone that might be suitable for Examination and give them your sticker.

What you might be able to do from the logbook

Conduct a speculum/bimanual examination

Insert a urinary cathetar

Assist in theatre: D+C, Laroscopy, Laparotomy (See Page 8-9)
