Welcome to your 6th Year O&G run

You learnt everything you need to know about O&G last year, now is your opportunity to use it. Over the next four weeks, while completing your logbook experiences, you will be able to practise being a house officer. To help you make the most of this time, we’ve created this practical ‘in-your-pocket’ guide for you to use as you go.

Each Clinical Location will tell you:

1) ‘How to prepare’

2) ‘What to do when you’re there’

3) ‘Possible learning opportunities to look out for’

Self-Directed Timetable.

You will each write your own timetable. Look at your logbook, and determine what are the gaps. There is a shared document that your group will use to alocate yourselves. The document has every Clinical Location. Simply put your initials next to the location and write which consultant you plan to be with (incase another student wants to also go, but with a different consultant).

Note: If there are 5th year students on placement, one of them will be allocated to each clinical location each weekday 8 - 4pm.

To know what activities are happening on any given day, you need to go to ‘Medirota’, the departments rostering system.

Lastly, previous 6th years have recommended to benefit of attending Nights and Weekends. If you are able to, we suggest rostering yourself to:

  • 1x set of SHO nights (3 nights) and

  • 1x Weekend shift (either Sat or Sun)

During these times we drop to a single team, so help from a 6th year is always appreciated and there are no 5th year students to compete with.

University Requirements

At the end of the run you will be required to have:

  • Formative MiniCEX (Try to complete in week 1)

  • Summative MiniCEX (SMO or Fellow)

  • Selection of ICCFs (SHO, Reg, SMO, Midwife)

  • Completed Logbook

These will all need to be sighted and signed on the last day of your run.

WhatsApp

For daily communication we use ‘whatsapp’. On your first day, someone from the group needs to set up a whataspp with the name: O&GYr6Cy[X].

This will allow people to ask for advice or share if there is something interesting happening that everyone should attend.

Allocated Consultant.

Waitematā does not have teams. In order for some continuity, you have each been allocated a consultant to spend a little more time with.

Over the 4 weeks try to attend (at least):

  • 1x Antenatal CLinic

  • 1x Gyn Clinic

  • 1x Theatre

  • 1x OnCall Shift

This way they will have a little more information when completing your ICCF.

Nb: Consultants were allocated randomly, so feel free to swap or choose your own consultant.

Handovers

Take a minute to write an introduction that is short, sweet, and to the point. If you sell something, use this space to describe it in detail and tell us why we should make a purchase. Tap into your creativity. You’ve got this.

  • It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
